ABSTRACT

This talk will present ERELT (Enhanced Radial Edgeless Tree), a tree visualization approach on modern mobile devices. ERELT is designed to offer a clear visualization of any tree structure with intuitive interaction. Such visualization can assist users in interacting with a hierarchical structure such as a media collection, file system, etc. In the ERELT visualization, a subset of the tree is displayed at a time. The displayed tree size depends on the maximum number of tree elements that can be put on the screen while maintaining clarity. Users can quickly navigate to the hidden parts of the tree through touch-based gestures. We have conducted a user study to evaluate this visualization for a music collection. The study results show that this approach reduces the time and effort in navigating tree structures for exploration and search tasks.

Other projects on information visualization, including logistics and climate change visualizations, will be briefly introduced.

Short Biography:

张康博士现任美国德州大学达拉斯分校计算机(Computer Science)专业和艺术与技术(Arts and Technology)专业终生教授,可视计算实验室主任。同时也是天津大学软件学院兼职教授和博导。他于1982年2月在成都电讯工程学院(现改名为电子科技大学)取得计算机工程学士学位, 1990年在英国布莱顿大学取得计算机工程博士学位,2011年在美国德州大学达拉斯分校取得EMBA学位。现任Journal of Visual Languages and Computing, International Journal of Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering, Journal of Big Data,和International Journal of Advanced Intelligence编委。发表过6本论著,60篇SCI和AHCI检索期刊论文,和140多篇会议论文。张康教授的主要研究领域是可视化语言,信息可视化,计算机与美学和艺术的关系, 软件工程, 及Web。
